Sports Massage

Sports Massage is not just for athletes or sports professionals: anyone can benefit form Sports Massage techniques whether or not they practice a particular sport or exercise in a gym. Whatever your lifestyle or activities, Sports Massage is effective at treating aches and pains, muscular tension and postural issues.

Many of my clients are not actively involved in sport but for one reason or another have muscular pain or discomfort. This may be caused by sitting at a desk for a sustained period, lifting incorrectly or an old injury. All of these clients can benefit from the techniques I use.

How does pain or an injury occur?

When you overuse a muscle, it causes micro trauma to the tissue which has to heal. sports massageAs the muscle fibres heal, they bind together. If your technique is compromised, for example: by not warming up before you exercise, adopting poor technique, overusing an already compromised muscle or not stretching effectively, it can cause injury to the muscle.

The muscle fibres around the site of the injury then form scar tissue or a "knot" in the muscle. This restricts the blood flow to the area and decreases the lymphatic drainage. The scar tissue prevents the muscle fibres from moving as well as they should and causes a reduction of the muscles function. This tightens the muscle causing you discomfort or pain.

Sports massage, with its special techniques, helps you regain normal function to the muscle or group of muscles and facilitates optimum muscle health.
